AMERICA INCORPORATED EXECUTIVES WERE AHEAD OF THE GAME IN THE 2050S. UNDERSTANDING THAT MANY OF THEIR POLICIES WERE BEING VIEWED AS INCREASINGLY CONTROVERSIAL, THEY BEGAN LOOKING FOR WAYS TO GET EMPLOYEES MORE INVESTED IN THE SUCCESS OF THEIR SUBSIDIARIES, AND BY PROXY, THE PARENT COMPANY. FOLLOWING THE BLOODY MONDAY MASSACRE IN THE RUSSIAN CORPORATION, THEY IMMEDIATELY PASSED THE EMPLOYEE INCENTIVE ACT OF 2054 (SEE NOTE). THE PURPOSE OF THIS POLICY WAS TO LINK THE WELFARE OF EMPLOYEES TO THE SUCCESS OF THE PARENT CORPORATION BY CREATING A COMPENSATION SYSTEM THAT REWARDS THEM FOR SUCCESSES IN PRODUCTIVITY AND PROFIT WHILE PENALIZE THEM WHEN THEY FALL SHORT.

 

**NOTE: AN “ACT” WAS A TERM GENERALLY USED IN THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT WHEN A LAW WAS PASSED. IT WAS THE FIRST INSTANCE OF USE UNDER THE CONTROL OF AMERICA INCORPORATED, AND WOULD ONLY BE USED ONE OTHER TIME WHEN A SECOND VERSION OF THE POLICY WAS ADOPTED. IT IS UNKNOWN WHY THIS TERMINOLOGY WAS USED FOR THIS PARTICULAR EDICT.

AME’S PREEMPTIVE ACTIONS IN 2054 SOFTENED THE BLOW IN THEIR SPHERE OF INFLUENCE IN WHEN THE GLOBAL CURRENCY BEGAN TO BE PHASED IN TWO YEARS LATER. GIVEN THE NAME “BYTECOIN,” IT WAS THE SECOND GENERATION OF THE INTERNET CURRENCY POPULAR IN THE EARLY PART OF THE CENTURY CALLED “BITCOIN”. THE INTRODUCTION OF THIS CURRENCY GAVE CORPORATIONS AND THEIR SUBSIDIARIES NEAR COMPLETE CONTROL OVER THE LIVES OF THEIR EMPLOYEES. ALL OTHER FORMS OF CURRENCY AND METHODS OF CONDUCTION TRANSACTIONS WOULD BECOME FORBIDDEN. PENALTIES FOR POOR PRODUCTIVITY OR MISBEHAVIOR COULD NOW INCLUDE NOT ONLY CUTTING WAGES, BUT NOW DEPRIVING ANYONE NOT FALLING IN LINE ANY OTHER MEANS OF SURVIVAL.

 

A WAVE OF UNREST THAT SWEPT THROUGH WORLD CORPORATIONS AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT WAS MADE ABOUT THE TRANSITION TO BYTECOIN. PEOPLE ALREADY STRIPPED OF THEIR NATIONAL IDENTITIES WITH THE RISE OF CORPORATION WERE NOW FEARFUL OF BEING STRIPPED OF THEIR INDIVIDUALITY AND PERSONAL FREEDOM. CHINA AND RUSSIA SAW LITTLE IMPACT, BUT EMPLOYEE RESPONSE IN OTHER CORPORATIONS RANGED BETWEEN WORKPLACE PROTESTS TO FULL BLOWN DEMONSTRATIONS. A GROWING NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES WERE READY TO BOLT CORPORATE CONTROL AND THE STABILITY AND COMFORT THAT BRINGS FOR A LIFE ROUGHING IT IN THE WILDERNESS. IN AMERICA, THAT’S WHAT SOME OF THEM DID.

 

 

GLOBAL UNREST

PEOPLE HAVE ALWAYS FLOCKED TO CITIES FOR OPPORTUNITY. NOW SOME WERE EAGER TO LEAVE THEM. THE LEVEL OF CONTROL BEING THRUST UPON EMPLOYEES WAS NOT PALATABLE TO THE INDEPENDENT-MINDED. IN AMERICA INCORPORATED, EMPLOYEES BEGAN LEAVING THE CITIES FOR BACKWOODS RURAL AREAS OUTSIDE OF ANY IMMEDIATE CONTROL. ALTHOUGH STILL IN THE SPHERE OF INFLUENCE, LIVING OFF THE LAND IN SMALL GROUPS IN CABINS AND COMMUNAL VILLAGES MEANT THEY WERE OUTSIDE IMMEDIATE CORPORATE CONTROL.

 

BY AND LARGE, THESE FORMER EMPLOYEES WERE LEFT TO THEIR OWN DEVICES IN MOST CORPORATIONS. IN AMERICA INCORPORATED, SPECIFICALLY, THERE WERE MUCH LARGER PROBLEMS TO ADDRESS THAN A FEW ROGUE DESERTERS WHO NO LONGER WANTED THE BENEFITS THE CORPORATION PROVIDED. INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS WERE COMMENCING ALL OVER THE SPHERE OF INFLUENCE AND MANUFACTURING WAS RAMPING UP TO LEVELS THAT SURPASSED THOSE BEFORE THE COLLAPSE. THOSE REASONS, AND MANY OTHERS, TOOK A MUCH HIGHER PRIORITY THAN A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE NOT WILLING TO SUBJECT THEMSELVES TO CORPORATE RULE.

REVERSE MIGRATION

CAVING TO REQUESTS FROM THE ELITE CLASS, INTERCORPEX BEGAN MEASURING ANALYTICS IN AN EFFORT TO RANK CORPORATIONS. THE MOST PRECIOUS COMMODITY TO PATRICIANS LOOKING TO MAKE DEALS WAS INFORMATION. TO THIS POINT, THE PRICE OF A PARENT COMPANY STOCK WAS MOST REFLECTIVE OF SUPPLY AND DEMAND AND LESS ABOUT THE OVERALL VALUATION AS COMPARED TO A COMPETITOR. UNHAPPY THAT THEY PLACED SECOND ON BOTH LISTS, THE CEO OF AMERICA INCORPORATED RESPONDED WITH A CORPORATE EDICT CALLED THE SECOND EMPLOYEE INCENTIVE ACT WHICH EXPANDS ON THE “CARROT AND STICK” APPROACH TO GOVERNING OUTLINES IN THE FIRST ACT. EMPLOYEES WERE NOT ONLY FINANCIALLY LINKED TO THE PARENT CORPORATION, BUT COULD ALSO REAP THE REWARDS FOR POSITIVE ACTIONS OR BE HARSHLY DISCIPLINED UP TO AND INCLUDING TERMINATION FOR NEGATIVE ONES. EMPLOYEES GETTING LAZY AND COMPLACENT WERE NO LONGER TOLERATED IN AMERICA OR ITS SUBSIDIARIES. PRODUCTIVITY WAS THE NEW WATCHWORD, AND THE EXECUTIVES IN WASHINGTON DEMONSTRATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT SETTLE FOR LESS FROM THEIR EMPLOYEES THAN MAXIMUM EFFORT.

RULES OF THE GAME CHANGE

THE NEW EDICT CAUSES MORE EMPLOYEES TO FLEE THEIR JOBS AND CHANCE LIVING ON THE STREETS. INSTEAD OF MAKING FOR THE EMPTY COUNTRYSIDE MOUNTAINS, MANY OF THESE RECENT DESERTERS STAYED IN THE CITIES THEY RESIDED IN. THEY CHOSE TO LIVE LIKE URCHINS INSTEAD OF MAKING A GO OF LIVING OFF THE LAND ― WITHIN MONTHS THEY WERE UNCLOTHED, UNFED, AND LEFT BEGGING FOR WHATEVER THEY COULD GET. THE NAME “URCHIN” BEGAN TO BE USED WITH GREATER FREQUENCY UNTIL SHORTENED COLLOQUIALLY TO “URCH” AND THE PLURAL “URCHES”. IN SLANG, IT WAS USED AMONG EMPLOYEES TO DESCRIBE ANYONE OR ANYTHING UNDESIRABLE.

 

THE NUMBER OF URCHES LIVING ON THE STREETS BEGAN TO SWELL. MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS, SUCH AS NEW YORK INCORPORATED, THE BOSTON COMPANY, CHICAGO INCORPORATED, AND THE CORPORATION OF PHILADELPHIA BEGAN PASSING EDICTS LABELING THEM CRIMINALS. SOON THESE CRIMINALS WOULD BECOME INCREASINGLY DISRUPTIVE. AT THE BEQUEST OF AMERICA, INC., MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS MADE ATTEMPTS TO BRING THEM BACK IN TO THE FOLD AS “BIOJACKS” BEGIN THEIR FIRST TESTING PHASE. RESENTFUL OF CORPORATE SOCIETY AND EVEN MORE UPSET AT THIS LATEST MEASURE OF CONTROL, URCHES BECOME MORE HOSTILE. THE SITUATION IN THE CITIES DETERIORATED TO THE POINT THAT THE PSS SPENT MOST OF ITS TIME RESPONDING TO EITHER EMPLOYEE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THEM OR THE CRIMES THEY WERE ACCUSED OF COMMITTING.

 

 

EXODUS OF THE DISGRUNTLED

VAGRANCY IS NOT A NEW CONCEPT. IN THE UNITED STATES, MOST MAJOR CITIES AND TOWNS HAD A HOMELESS PROBLEM THAT GOVERNMENTS AT ALL LEVELS WERE EITHER UNWILLING OR UNABLE TO ADDRESS. IT WAS, HOWEVER, A NEW CONCEPT FOR AMERICA INCORPORATED. AFTER RETURNING TO FULL EMPLOYMENT FOLLOWING THE COLLAPSE, EXECUTIVES WOULD NOT HAVE IMAGINED THAT THE ISSUE WOULD ARISE AGAIN. AFTER ALL, EMPLOYEES IN THE PARENT COMPANY AND ITS SUBSIDIARIES WERE BEING TAKEN CARE OF LIKE NONE OTHER BEFORE THEM. HOUSING, EDUCATION, THE BEST HEALTH CARE, AND EVEN ENTERTAINMENT WERE BEING PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE. THAT ANYBODY WOULD WANT TO GIVE THAT UP WAS UNFATHOMABLE.

 

GIVE IT UP THEY DID, AND AS THE NUMBERS OF URCHES ON THE STREETS SWELLED, SO TOO DID THE COMPETITION FOR RESOURCES NEEDED FOR SURVIVAL. RELIANT ON THE BENEVOLENCE OF EMPLOYEES, COMPETITION FOR HANDOUTS BECAME FIERCE AND SOMETIMES EVEN VIOLENT. IN SOME CITIES, ST. LOUIS, LOS ANGELES, AND DALLAS NOTABLY, IT WAS FORBIDDEN TO HELP ANYONE WHO LEFT THE EMPLOYEE RANKS. FAILING TO ABIDE BY THOSE STRICT EDICTS WAS MEANT WITH HARSH CONSEQUENCES. IRONICALLY, THESE HARSH CONTROLS OF EMPLOYEE BEHAVIOR ONLY DROVE MORE LEAVE THE CORPORATIONS. THE PROBLEM WAS BECOMING MORE PRONOUNCED, AND THEN IT REACHED A TIPPING POINT.

 

ON HIS WAY HOME FROM WORK, THE CEO OF BOSTON WAS APPROACHED BY A GROUP OF URCHES LOOKING FOR CHARITY. RESENTFUL OF THEM FOR LEAVING CORPORATE CONTROL, AND TIRED OF BEING CONSTANTLY ACCOSTED FOR HANDOUTS, HE REFUSED. RESENTMENT IS OFTEN A TWO-WAY STREET. THE GROUP OF MEN DECIDED IF HE WASN’T GOING TO GIVE, THEY WERE GOING TO TAKE. THE CEO WAS BEATEN SEVERELY, AND ANY VALUABLE POSSESSIONS STOLEN IN AN INCIDENT ALL TWO REMINISCENT OF THE VIOLENCE AFTER THE ECONOMIC COLLAPSE. THE CEO WOULD TAKE FIVE DAYS TO AWAKEN FROM THE COMA THEY PUT HIM IN. THE WORLD WAS A DIFFERENT PLACE WHEN HE FINALLY OPENED HIS EYES.

 

THE BOSTON URCH PARTY

NEWS OF THE ATTACKS WAS IMMEDIATELY REPORTED ON AME NEWS, THE CORPORATE NEWS CHANNEL. OUTRAGE AND REPERCUSSIONS WERE LEVELED AGAINST THE URCHES ACROSS THE SPHERE OF INFLUENCE. UNDER IMMENSE PRESSURE, THE PARENT COMPANY DECIDES TO ACT. IN WASHINGTON, THE CEO MANDATED TO ALL MUNICIPAL AND SUBSIDIARY CORPORATIONS TO SPREAD THE WORD ON THE STREETS THAT URCHES RETURN TO FULL EMPLOYEE STATUS OR FACE REPERCUSSIONS. THEY DID AS INSTRUCTED, AND THE ORDER WAS IGNORED BY THE URCH POPULATIONS AS TOOTHLESS PANDERING. THEY WERE WRONG.

 

CATHARSIS IS AN OLD GREEK WORD MEANING THE PURIFICATION AND PURGATION OF EMOTIONS—ESPECIALLY PITY AND FEAR. THE MEANING IN THE 2056 CONTEXT WAS TWOFOLD: EMPLOYEE RELIEF OF PITY AND FEAR FOR FROM THESE STREET DWELLERS AND A PURIFICATION OF SOCIETY. AFTER A WEEK’S NOTICE, AND ONLY A HANDFUL OF VAGRANTS RETURNING TO WORK, ACTION WAS TAKEN. WITH THE BUREAU OF CORPORATE SECURITY SPEARHEADING THE OPERATION AND THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND SECURITY ORGANIZATIONS IN EACH CITY IN SUPPORT, URCHES WERE ROUNDED UP ON THE STREETS. THIS WAS NO SIMPLE RELOCATION OR REEDUCATION EFFORT. NO, THIS WAS A MOVE THAT ASSURED EVERY EMPLOYEE IN AMERICA INCORPORATED WHO REMEMBERED LIFE IN THE OLD UNITED STATES THAT THE NATION WAS UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT. URCHES WHO WERE APPREHENDED AFTER THE DEADLINE WERE TAKEN TO PROCESSING FACILITIES, IDENTIFIED, AND SUMMARILY EXECUTED.

 

WORD OF WHAT WAS HAPPENING TRAVELLED FAST. AS THE CATHARSIS SWEPT THROUGH THE URBAN AREAS OF AMERICA INCORPORATED, MANY URCHES IN MAJOR CITIES FLED UNDERGROUND – BOSTON, CHICAGO, SAN FRANCISCO, AND NEW YORK BY FAR SAW THE GREATEST RISE IN THE NUMBER OF SUBTERRANEAN URCHES. THEY WERE FORCED TO LIVE LIKE COMMON SEWER RATS, BUT DID ACHIEVE THEIR GOAL ― NEITHER THE BCS NOR PSS SAW FIT TO PURSUE STRAGGLERS DOWN THERE. THOUSANDS OF EX-EMPLOYEES MANAGED TO AVOID CAPTURE AND CERTAIN DEATH, BUT THOUSANDS MORE PERISHED DURING THIS PURGE.

 

 

 

 

THE CATHARSIS BEGINS

ONE MIGHT THINK THAT GLOBAL CORPORATIONS WOULD BE OUTRAGED ABOUT THIS MISTREATMENT. WHILE THERE WERE SOME WHO TRIED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES TO ENHANCE THEIR IMAGE ON THE WORLD STAGE, MOST OTHERS MIMICKED THE SOLUTION TO SOLVE THEIR OWN PROBLEMS. CULTURES USED TO MORE AUTOCRATIC REGIMES PRIOR TO THE COLLAPSE SAW THEIR PARENT CORPORATIONS’ DEAL WITH THEIR DESERTION PROBLEMS IN MORE DRACONIAN WAYS. MALCONTENTS IN CORPORATIONS AROUND THE GLOBE WERE OFTEN PUBLICALLY EXECUTED IN ARENAS AND VILLAGE SQUARES. BODIES WERE PUT ON DISPLAY AS A WARNING. ONCE THE CATHARSIS ENDED, CORPORATIONS WERE ONCE AGAIN FIRMLY IN CONTROL, AND IT WAS CLEAR TO EVERYONE THAT DISSENT WOULD NO LONGER BE TOLERATED.
