NEW YORK WAS ONE OF THE FIRST CITIES TARGETED TO BE PACIFIED BY CORPORATE INTERESTS ONCE THEY ASSUMED POWER IN WASHINGTON AND BEGAN REGIONAL OPERATIONS IN ST. LOUIS AND SAN FRANCISCO. WHILE IT NO LONGER HELD THE GEOGRAPHIC IMPORTANCE IT ONCE DID (I.E. DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION), IT WAS STILL A POWERFUL SYMBOL. TOGETHER WITH LONDON, THEY WERE THE TWO MAIN WORLD FINANCIAL CENTERS PRIOR TO THE ECONOMIC COLLAPSE. BRITISH CORPORATIONS COULD KILL TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE IN LONDON ― THEY WERE PACIFYING AND SECURING BOTH THE FINANCIAL CENTER AND SEAT OF GOVERNMENTAL POWER AT THE SAME TIME. THE CORPORATIONS THAT WOULD BECOME AMERICA INCORPORATED HAD TWICE THE AMOUNT OF WORK TO DO.

 

WHEN THE CORPORATIONS CAME INTO TOWN, THEY SET UP A TENT CITY IN CENTRAL PARK AND BEGAN EXPANDING OUTWARD. AS AREAS WERE SECURED, LIVING QUARTERS WERE ASSIGNED TO WORKERS AND THE TENT CITY BECAME A PROCESSING CENTER FOR THOSE STREAMING INTO THE CITY WITH THE PROMISE OF FOOD, WORK, AND SAFETY. THE ISLAND OF MANHATTAN WAS IN A STATE OF INCREDIBLE DISREPAIR. MUCH OF THE ANGER AT THE ECONOMIC COLLAPSE WAS TARGETED AT FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS, WALL STREET, AND GOVERNMENTAL BUILDINGS IN THE CITY. THE REHABILITATION PROCESS WOULD BE A LONG, PAINFUL ONE.

 

ONCE MANHATTAN WAS SECURED, FOCUS SPREAD TO OTHER BOROUGHS AND ACROSS THE HUDSON INTO WESTERN NEW JERSEY. SECURING MAJOR ROADWAYS WAS A PRIMARY CONCERN AS THE AMOUNT OF FOOD REQUIRED TO FEED THE SWELLING POPULATION WAS BARELY BEING MET WITHOUT THE LOSSES SUFFERED FROM HIGHWAYMEN AND ROVING GANGS. SECURITY, CONSTRUCTION AND AGRICULTURE WERE THE THREE FIELDS HUMAN RESOURCES ALLOCATED THE MOST PERSONNEL. ACCOUNTANTS, LAWYERS, AND DELIVERYMEN ALL NOW FOUND THEMSELVES ON PATROL AND AT CHECKPOINTS MANNING REPURPOSED MILITARY EQUIPMENT. CHEFS AND WAITRESSES WERE PUT TO WORK IN FOOD PREPARATION, WHILE WORKERS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE WERE ASSIGNED TO WORK TEAMS TO REPAIR THE INFRASTRUCTURE TO MAKE THE CITY LIVABLE AGAIN.

 

NEW YORK WOULD JOIN WASHINGTON AS GROUND ZERO FOR TWO MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE RECONSTRUCTION PROJECTS IN THE LATE 2030S AND 2040S. COUPLED WITH THE URBAN RECONSTRUCTION INITIATIVE, IT WAS THE PROVING GROUND FOR MONORAILS THAT WOULD BECOME THE EFFICIENT AND QUICK SPEEDRAIL SUBWAY SYSTEM, SMART TRAFFIC MONITORING, SMART ROADS, AND URBAN WALKWAYS. AUTOMOBILE OWNERSHIP IS FORBIDDEN IN THE CITY WITHOUT A SPECIAL CORPORATE REMIT. AS A RESULT, THE MASS-TRANSIT SYSTEM BECAME A FIRST-RATE METHOD OF MOVING EMPLOYEES TO WHERE THEY NEEDED TO GO.

 

THE CITY, ONCE SERVED BY THREE MAJOR AIRPORTS, CONSOLIDATED THEM DOWN TO ONE SUPER AIRPORT WITH A FOCUS ON EFFICIENCY, LUXURY, AND MODERNISM. AS THERE WAS NO PRIVATE PROPERTY OWNERSHIP, CONCEPTS LIKE EMINENT DOMAIN NO LONGER EXISTED. CONSIDERING THE STATE OF MANY NEIGHBORHOODS IN OUTER BOROUGHS FOLLOWING THE COLLAPSE, THE CORPORATION COULD DO AS IT WAS FIT IN REVITALIZING WHOLE SECTIONS OF THE CITY. GONE WERE THE CRIME RIDDEN NEIGHBORHOODS AND SLUMS. INSTEAD, THEY WERE REPLACED BY LIVING AREAS WITH PLENTY OF GREEN SPACE, AMPLE TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS, AND FIRST-RATE SECONDARY AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS FOR CHILDREN’S EDUCATION.

 

AS WITH ALL AREAS WITHIN THE AME SPHERE OF INFLUENCE, THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT DETERMINES WHERE AN EMPLOYEE IS DOMICILED. THIS IS BASED ON THE TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT, THE STATURE OF THE EMPLOYEE, COMMUTE TIME, FAMILY SIZE, AND SPACE AVAILABLE. EMPLOYEES ARE GIVEN NO PREFERENCE IN THE HOUSING ASSIGNED, NOR ARE GIVEN CHOICE IF THE NEED TO RELOCATE THEM ARISES. DESPITE COMPUTERS DOING MUCH OF THE WORK, THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT IS ROBUST IN STAFF AND THEY MANAGE ALL ASPECTS OF EMPLOYEE PLACEMENT AND RELOCATION.
