PRIVATE PROPERTY CEASED TO EXIST IN MOST AREAS FOLLOWING THE COLLAPSE. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF PATRICIANS, NO EMPLOYEE OR EXECUTIVE HAD THE RIGHT TO OWN OR HOLD ANY FORM OF REAL ESTATE OR PROPERTY. OWNERSHIP WAS HELD BY THE CORPORATION WHO WOULD THEN ASSIGN RESOURCES ON AN AS NEEDED BASIS. ALONG WITH THE DISAPPEARANCE OF PROPERTY LINES COMES ANOTHER LOST TO THE DUSTBIN OF HISTORY: GEOGRAPHIC BORDERS.

A WORLD WITHOUT BORDERS

NATIONS MAY HAVE HAD THEM, BUT CORPORATIONS ARE NOT NATIONS. MANY OF THE ONES WHO STEPPED IN TO RESTORE ORDER WERE MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES WHO OPERATED AROUND THE WORLD AND NEVER PAID MUCH ATTENTION TO LINES ON A MAP. FOR THEM, IT WAS ABOUT SHIPPING PRODUCT, GAINING MARKET SHARE, AND INCREASING PROFITS. THEY THOUGHT GLOBALLY AND ACTED ACCORDINGLY.

AS CITIES, TOWNS, AND VILLAGES CAME UNDER CORPORATE CONTROL, THE UNDERLYING QUESTION WAS WHERE IT ENDED. WHEN TWO COMPETING CORPORATIONS AS CITIES, TOWNS, AND VILLAGES CAME UNDER CORPORATE CONTROL, THE UNDERLYING QUESTION WAS WHERE IT ENDED. WITH THE RATE OF EXPANSION, IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE CORPORATE BOUNDARIES BEGAN TO COLLIDE INTO EACH OTHER. THE OLD NOTION OF GEOGRAPHIC RELEVANCE WAS GONE, AND THE CORPORATE THIRST FOR EXPANSION TO HARNESS RESOURCES, NATURAL AND EMPLOYEE ALIKE, MEANT THAT THESE BORDER AREAS WERE OFTEN CONTESTED AND CONSTANTLY IN FLUX.

 

MOST CORPORATIONS SUBSCRIBED TO THE NOTION OF MANIFEST DESTINY: THE TERM FOR THE 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN ATTITUDE TOWARDS WESTWARD EXPANSION THAT BELIEVED THE UNITED STATES NOT ONLY COULD, BUT WAS DESTINED TO, STRETCH FROM COAST TO COAST. THIS MODIFIED BELIEF THAT CORPORATIONS SHOULD CONTINUE TO SEEK AGGRESSIVE EXPANSION TO CONTROL AS MUCH AS THEY WERE DESTINED, AND IF OTHER, SMALLER CORPORATIONS WERE IN THE WAY, THEY COULD EITHER BE SUBJECT TO A HOSTILE TAKEOVER OR COLLAPSE ENTIRELY. WITH NO GEOGRAPHIC, POLITICAL, OR CULTURAL LIMITATIONS, IT WAS CONCEIVABLE THAT THE WORLD COULD BECOME DOMINATED BY A FEW STRONG CORPORATIONS.

 

WHILE THIS PREVAILING ATTITUDE MOTIVATED THE CORPORATE ENTITIES, IT WAS FROWNED UPON BY THE NEW INTERCORPEX EXCHANGE AND THE PATRICIANS OF THE WORLD WHO WANTED EVEN MORE CORPORATIONS TO BUY AND SELL SHARES TO. IN 2037, AMERICA INCORPORATED FIRST USED THE TERM “SPHERE OF INFLUENCE” TO DESCRIBE THE AREA IT EXERTED CONTROL OVER.

 

THE PROBLEM WITH CORPORATE GOVERNANCE

THE NAME STUCK, AND INTERCORPEX SOUGHT TO CHECK ITS EXPANSION WITHOUT ASSIGNING ACTUAL GEOGRAPHIC BORDERS. THUS, NEW POLICIES WERE ENACTED TO GOVERN CONTESTED FRINGES OF A SPHERE OF INFLUENCE AND HOW CORPORATIONS WERE ALLOWED TO EXPAND INTO THEM. AS TRADING ON THE EXCHANGE CONTINUED TO INCREASE EXPONENTIALLY, PARENT COMPANIES WERE FORCED TO ABIDE BY INTERCORPEX RULES. BY 2045, THE IDEA OF MANIFEST DESTINY FADED AND SPHERES OF INFLUENCE BECAME MORE STATIC. BORDER AREAS REMAINED IN FLUX BETWEEN SOME CORPORATIONS, BUT LIKE TRENCH WARFARE IN WORLD WAR I, THE SHIFT WAS NEVER DRAMATIC. MERGERS BECAME MORE FREQUENT, MOST NOTABLY THE AMERICAN MERGER WITH CANADA AND THE UNITED KINGDOM’S WITH IRELAND.

 

MERGERS AND DIVESTITURES CONTINUED, AND PARENT CORPORATIONS INTERNALLY SET UP MORE SUBSIDIARIES TO FOCUS ON BRINGING PRODUCTS AND SERVICES TO MARKET. HOWEVER, DOMESTIC ECONOMIES COULD ONLY SUPPORT SO MUCH. ECONOMIES HAD BECOME INTERNALIZED, AND GROWTH STAGNATED. EXECUTIVES SOUGHT OTHER METHODS FOR ENHANCING THEIR POWER AND PRESTIGE AND ACCELERATING GROWTH, NAMELY THOUGH ENHANCING GLOBAL TRADE. THE RESULTING BOOM TO THE WORLD ECONOMY WOULD HAVE UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES ON A GLOBAL SCALE IN THE YEARS TO COME.
